  • Description

A convict from Australia flees to India using the false name Lin and discovers a new life with a shocking spectrum of diversity as colourful, dark, enchanting and chaotic as the land itself. Gregory David Roberts’ search for meaning, philosophy and love as a fugitive being hunted for many-a-crime in this historical fiction, stimulates the demons and the angels in the minds of all readers.

    Summary of the book

A man with a deceitful identity becomes Indian at heart as he begins his life in India, in the enigmatic world of Bombay slums. Unlike the frowns that the slums received from outside world, Lin discovers the wonderful connection that binds every man to another in the deepest of despair and hope, intense of the moments of love and hatred. Lin’s life as a normal slum dweller and his later entry to the underworld of Bombay is filled with layers of betrayal, love, danger, fear, all culminating in an eerie liberation towards the end. This book is a complex journey of a man’s passionate tale surprisingly extraordinary for a debut novel.

    Drugs/Mafia/Philosophy/Adventure/Poverty=Shantaram

Well let me put it straight: it's just another novel till the chapter 29 (i.e, almost half of the novel). But later that it begins to make sense and is heart touching. Few points to new buyers:

    >Not a good pick for thriller kind
    >A good pick for those wanting to know prison life
    >A good pick for few doses of philosophy. In fact it's coz he explains so much philosophy...that has made this book a 900+ read.
    >And a very heartening novel in a few chapters.
    >A definite portray of Mumbai as a city...

933 pg, 42 chapters long masterpiece!

The experience of reading Shantaram is like that of drinking a fine scotch. With every chapter, you get a new high. The last few chapters create an incredible levels of curiosity and shock simultaneuosly. And then, the last chapter, in a clever way, lays the basis for the sequel to Shantaram. It leaves you wanting for more. It is rumoured that Gregory Roberts has been working on the sequel for the past 4 years. I have to say that I find it difficult to wait for the sequel. You just fall in l...

    Mind-Blown!

Gregory David Roberts took me an a slow, yet a thrilling roller coaster ride on this one.

To be in the shoes of Lin (Shantaram) is an experience you'll want to have once you've read this book. The precision of details, timing, suspense, amount of data to disclosed is amazing. He's got you hooked on to this one for he makes Lin's life look so interesting, you do not want to turn away from it.

It is a huge book to read, and like I said earlier, a slow book to read as well. But it is a book t...

    One of classics for collection

This book is very bulky and I was wondering what the author has written so much to fill it. After I started to read through pages, I admit, I couldn't stop. Some of the wisdom and philosophy have never been read anywhere by me before. The flow of the story is very well and its very interesting to read through Lin's journey through it.

At times, you get bored at some paragraphs. But jumping pages may make you miss some critical pieces in the story. I took long time to finish it, due to my oth...

    A Delight

It is indeed a delight to read Shantaram, more so, if you happen to be in Mumbai (even if for a while). It does justice to the city, in ways unimaginable. The way the author has beautifully understood and explained the intricacies of 'Being Indian', it builds a warmth.
The book makes the reader embark on Lin's journey and live it through his eyes - which is worthwhile. It has everything - love, hate, joy, sadness, life, and the inevitable, death.

    Shantaram : A good read

The way the author has narrated the story appealed to me. The chronology of events in the story keeps a reader glued to the seat and maintain the excitement momentum to finish the reading. The characters are well portrayed and equally well orchestrated in the backdrop of Mumbai city. A good read.

    An excellent read

900+ pages pass just like that. A great book on Mumbai's underbelly (black markets, jails, underworld, etc). Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a great read.
