Sholay: The Making of a Classic is the fascinating saga of one of the biggest timeless Indian blockbusters, which set a record on the silver screen in the mid-seventies. It archives each and every aspect of this Ramesh Sippy magnum opus.

    Summary of the Book

Sholay, the very name mesmerizes all the cinema admirers of India. Sholay: The Making of a Classic is an endeavour that painstakingly captures all the nitty-gritty behind the film, beginning from the conceptualization of the story to the laborious process of casting, moving on to visualization over two years in a barren, rocky landscape, and lastly, the first few weeks after the film's release across the country. The book is brimming with captivating anecdotes such as Danny Denzongpa's exit from the film, Amjad Khan bagging the role of the immoral bandit called Gabbar Singh, and also the steamy romance between Hema Malini and Dharmendra on the sets. This title was published in the year 2000, to commemorate the silver jubilee of Sholay. The author, Anupama Chopra has been conferred the National Award for Best Book on Cinema in 2000 for the book.

    Wonderful

Fantastic... I have lots of book on films but this is the best and outstanding... surprisingly it doesn't take much pages in analyzing story, scene, dialogue etc. but it is actually the story of MAKING of the film.. which is not less interested than the film... to me it's Anupama Chopra's best book. Bollywood film lover should not miss it. Sholay is not my fvt film but this book is certainly the one!

    Quite a disappointing book

Jai Arjun Singh's recently released making of "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro" is a far superior read than this dud. Unfortunately, neither the subject of his book nor the author came with the hype enjoyed by Sholay. One would imagine Sholay back-story to have the the most masala, given the star-egos and chaotic workings of mainstream Bollywood. Sadly, both the writing and the tid-bits are quite lame. Today's casual blogs and IMDb trivia section are way more entertaining and informative; I am surprised t...
