  • Description
I was supposed to be having the time of my life. When Esther Greenwood wins an internship on a New York fashion magazine in 1953, she is elated, believing she will finally realise her dream to become a writer. But in between the cocktail parties and piles of manuscripts, Esther's life begins to slide out of control. She finds herself spiralling into depression and eventually a suicide attempt, as she grapples with difficult relationships and a society which refuses to take women's aspirations seriously. The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath's only novel, was originally published in 1963 under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas. The novel is partially based on Plath's own life and descent into mental illness, and has become a modern classic. The Bell Jar has been celebrated for its darkly funny and razor sharp portrait of 1950s society and has sold millions of copies worldwide.

    The Bell Jar Review

Plath takes you on a journey from the base to the tip of a knife. The travel through the cutting edge leaves scars that bring Esther to life.

We have all had a part of Esther in us. We will always have. No matter how subtle or intense.

You can read the first 100 pages without much effort and get only a glimpse of Esther. It's quick and brilliant. For the rest of the book I advise you all to go slow. Let Esther sit with you while you savour her individuality and Plath's fragrance around it....

    The Bell Jar

This is not a review, just my experience with the book and I hope many many more people will read this one. I read this one at one go. The writing is brutally honest and sharp. The honest insights about love, sex, friendship and more ,redefines the conventional idealistic meaning of these words. Even if you do not know anything about Plath, her poetry and her life you can still enjoy this book. What causes me a lot of bewilderment is that a few people call the book depressing. It moved me bu...

    A Classic

A Literal Classic, Don't take my word for it....
The fact that Sylvia Plath may only have had a single novel published doesn't affect the fact that this one will remain in my memory for years to come.....A simple yet influential piece of writing.

    Sylvia...O Sylvia, Why?

I always maintain that Sylvia is someone known for her poetry more than prose.
Her poetry is revolutionary, especially Ariel, and I strongly reccommend it.
The Bell Jar is a good read for someone wanting to know more about her, or if you are an angsty teen going through similar situations.
Otherwise, on the whole it is not a very fine work of art.
