One of the celebrated faces among makers of parallel cinema, Basu Chatterjee always portrayed the pitfalls of Indian society through his films. Triyacharitra is one such film by Chatterjee, which sheds light on the patriarchal framework of the country. The drama has been penned by Shivmurti and boasts of mind-blowing performances by Om Puri, Rajeshwari Sachdev and Naseeruddin Shah.
Born in a poor family, a little girl is engaged to a man at the tender age of 13, a much-prevalent custom in rural India. However, her husband works far away from their village, in Calcutta. To get over her loneliness, the girl befriends a local truck driver. Their friendship blossoms into love and the driver offers huge sum of money to the girl’s parents to marry her. Fuming at her “sin”, the father-in-law of the girl takes her away and rapes her.
